unknown interface with 6821

This is the right place to discuss on how to implement hardware vsync, adding a VIA or AY chipset, puting multiple roms, or how to design a new flash expansion card.

unknown interface with 6821

Post by Symoon »

I found this with a machine I bought a few years back.
Anyone knows what it could be used for?

Some kind of peripheral I/O expander, maybe an attempt to give the Oric extra I/O to support a modem or perhaps joysticks? Those empty sockets are kind of interesting.

For reference:

Yeah it's like a VIA but less Versatile :D
The sockets are just cheap connectors to link to a breadboard or whatever, just like on an arduino, the pinout seems to be the 8 I/O lines on one side, then the 2 control lines, 3 pins for ground and 3 pins for 5V.

I will have to check some books, seems like the previous owner might have been a radioamateur (not sure about the English word for that). So maybe he plugged his radio hardware to the Oric.

It would be fascinating to know how this works in case it gives us a path to MIDI or Serial I/O ..

Also, is it compatible with a microdisc, etc... these simple cards tend to have a minimalistic address decoding that catch everything in page 3

It monopolizes the Page3 from #380 to #3FF for only...4 I/O registers

No serial output nor input, I'm afraid. It seems an add on to provide with 16 digital I/O. With external interrupt support. If I am right, the unpopulated sockets just give easy access to the two 8 bit ports plus some other signals of the PIA.

Great for experimenting, but not sure if anything else.
