What is this Oric model in an auction?

In this forum you can write about anything that does not fit in other forums.
This includes generic Oric talkings and things that are totaly unrelated but want to share with people here :)

What is this Oric model in an auction?

Post by xahmol »

At the moment an auction is ongoing at the Dutch Marktplaats site.

The lot includes many retros: Sinclair stuff, an Amstrad CPC but also an Oric and an Oric diskdrive. Price went up to way high for me to consider for stuff sold as ‘untested’ (EUR 475 for the lot know as I write this).

But curious about the Oric stuff, what us this?

The computer seems a heavily modded Oric 1 in Atmos case/Atmos with Oric 1 label? And the diskdrive: some sort of dual disk modification?
Does anybody recognise this?

The machine itself is probably just a standard Oric modified to have both the 1.0 and 1.1 ROMs, which explains the leds on the top right and the switch at the bottom, and the disk drive is possibly a variant of Cumana?

As you wrote, it seems to be Oric 1 and Oric Atmos cases mixed up together...

The FDD unit looks like a home-made stuff.

Ok, confirms what I thought myself: homemade mods.
Just wanted to be sure I was not passing up on some super rare prototype version or something.

Then certainly will leave it. Seller seemed open to sell the Oric stuff separately but was obviously very reluctant to do so with heavy bidding still on the whole lot. Seller has no idea on conditIon and even on what he is selling as he is the curator trying to get the highest proceeds from a legacy after dead of the owner. But he has been told by many that it is rare and worth a lot, and he wants to maximise proceeds (which of course is fully his duty as curator).

Still would love to have an original drive for the Oric though. But original Oric hardware in the Atmos line looks gorgeous, the mods here kind of botch that in my opinion. Also, as probably I wopould not use the drive much as I way prefer modern mass storage stuff like the Cumana Reborn for day to day use, I am certainly not buying above a price threshold that is far too low for at least all eBay auctions.
(And still bummed I missed that local Marktplaats auction last week where a pristine Atmos with Microdisc and plotter selling for a met 125 euro. Certainly would have competed in bidding had I known of that auction. But also glad the buyer is a well known enthusiast from the Spectrum seen that is very enthousiastic about his Oric purchase, so that is at least helpful for a base of a Dutch Oric community).

I recently got an Oric-1 that was upgraded to Atmos (Oric used to sell such kits), and having a switch to choose between both ROMs. This wasn't made by the owner though, but by the shop that sold the upgrade kit!

So yes, such things do exist and were sometimes made by "professionals" ;)

Oric-1 to Atmos upgrade kits were a thing, for a very brief period. Multi-colour cases have been seen before, usually indicate the original user took the leap .. I hope whoever ends up getting this finds their way back to us ... :)

I think the disk drive is a Cumana one put in a larger case to house the drives.
The switch looks like the one on Cumana interfaces.
