oric advanced user guide is still available

Here is the place to discuss about the magazines (CEO Mag, OUM, Rhetoric, Theoric, Hebdogiciel, ... are all welcome here) and books.

I bought the OAUG on Amazon some years ago, was very pleasing to receive a book still smelling of fresh print, shrink wrapped :)

Does anyone know if this book is still available somewhere?
(real book or scanned copy).
I wish I had bought it on Amazon, I just didn't realise it was UK's Oric bible by then!
EDIT: ok now I feel stupid: just found a copy of this book in an old box! :?

My Atmos manual was falling apart so just bought a new one on ebay for £14!
AUG doesn't seem to be available anymore even though it is the Oric Bible imho!

I haven't seen a copy of AUG anywhere for ages. I guess everyone who has a copy is holding onto them like the holy grail.

It looks like the author, Leycester Whewell, has a Linked In profile and DBug seems to already be connected with him so I guess it is possible to ask if he is willing (or can) distribute digital versions of his book. ;)

Hope you are doing well :)

I was wondering: Do you know if it is possible to find somewhere some editions for the Oric Advanced User Guide?

I know a few people who would really like to have it, even if it was just a digital edition.

Best regards,

Thanks for your message. I haven't thought about that book for years! I didn't keep any copies after moving house in 2003, nor any of the hardware. The only suggestion I have is the British Library which was sent 5 copies when the book was published.
Kind regards, Leycester

I believe the British Library is a non-pending library(?) so not sure about that one.
They still appear on Ebay from time to time.

Amazon seem to have bought up various firms that had stores of unsold books so I'd guess if they don't have them it's unlikely there are some hidden stocks.

Thanks for reaching out to him DBug! ;)

Are there scanned versions of the book? I guess that would be our last hope of having a digital version. ;)

Thanks DBug for the enquiry!

The book is indeed listed in the British Library's main catalogue:
Explore the British Library - oric advanced user guide

It appears to be possible to order a digital or print copy:
- click on the "I want this" tab below the book details
- then click on the "Go" button to the right of the 2nd option "My Home or Office"

You will then be redirected there:
https://ondemand.bl.uk/onDemand/itemDet ... 1008802659

If you then input "1-257" (the book has 257 pages) in the "Pages" text field then click on "Check availability", you will be presented with two buying options (either paper, or digital encrypted PDF), delivery options and quality options.

Selecting "4 days" in "Delivery speed" to get the cheapest price, you get the following quotes depending on what you select for "Quality" (which is related to dpi resolution):
Paper: £33 for standard quality, £53 for high quality
Digital: £34 for standard quality, £58 for high quality

I find it is quite a lot of money, especially for the 'High' quality as I wouldn't trust the 'Standard' option which is only 150 dpi, see here for details: http://www.bl.uk/help/how-to-order-from ... and-online

As to the digital version, the problem is it will be DRM-encrypted with your username and password, so it may not be practical to share it with the community unless there is a means to reprint the file to PDF via a virtual PDF printer to get rid of the DRM...

It would be preferable of course if owners of the book would be ok to scan the book for the community... The more owners willing to help, the less work it would be as the scan work could be divided... But maybe it is not practical because scanning might damage the book?

EDIT - if noone wants to scan their copy of the book, maybe the best solution would be for interested people to share the cost of the print version that someone will buy and then scan for the rest of the group (and for the community)... If 10 people are interested then £3 or £5 each is much more affordable than £33 or £53...
